Amos I Root first began working with bees as a hobby in his twenties in the 1860s,  he was to become of the  founders of the modern honey industry in America. Root formed his own company in 1869 in his Ohio hometown to manufacture beehives and beekeeping equipment. At the peak of its business, the company was shipping four railroad freight cars of beekeeping equipment a day. Among his major contributions to the industry was a method to harvest honey  without destroying the beehive. He wrote the ABC of Bee Culture to share his knowledge of bee behaviour and beekeeping. Future revisions over the years by family members resulted in the title becoming The ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture, this edition contains revisions up until 1947 and is a wonderful history of the business of keeping bees.
